Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
