Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then discovered numerous other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state early analysis show the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to solve the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident left him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
